Impressions

Getting schooled by HW in the early days, when the light was still blinding

Teachers leave impressions.  Some impressions are positive, some impressions are negative.  Positive impressions are not necessarily “good”, negative impressions are not necessarily “bad”.  Impressions just are.  When an artist speaks of “negative space” is that space bad?

Lately I’ve been thinking about impressions made by my teachers.  These are the voices in my head.

Here’s a few that stuck:

  • “Introduce yourself to the students on either side of you.”  (We introduce ourselves, there is the hum of conversation)   “Very good, now one of those people you just met won’t be here in 3 weeks.  Don’t be that person.” (PB)
  • “You lack faith in the outcome and the mare knows that.” (HW)
  • After asking what my assignment was:  “There’s boats in the back, go find something interesting to work on” (MH)

Sometimes I wonder what impressions I’m making.

I am a husband and father, I am a scientist and teacher, I am a horseman. At night all the "I am's" go in a box and I shut the lid. I sleep like a dog.
