Early August

Before the grindstone that transforms idealism into realism begins to turn,
a teacher dreams of what could be.

Don’t give them a roadmap, give them a compass.

Don’t give them a pathway to “Success” or a roadmap to riches.
Prescription kills curiosity and joy.

Teach them the principles of navigation.
And give them courage to drift and wander.
The stars will point the way home.

Don’t give them a roadmap, give them a compass.

A compass, and a machete.

I am a husband and father, I am a scientist and teacher, I am a horseman. At night all the "I am's" go in a box and I shut the lid. I sleep like a dog.

  1. MD: You should be in charge, ffs.
How to convey that idealism + naivete = disaster/war/death but idealist alloyed and modified by realism is the road to accomplishment and progess.
The Founding Fathers and all good scientists know this; all good teacher and good doctors.
Thanks for pointing the way to so many.
