The day will come when I can sit down and listen to the entirety of a half-hour radio show. For now I sip media dropwise as I take care of life. I never get the whole story, just little snippets perfect for rumination. Yesterday’s 5-minute sip was on the way to the feed store; a story about the music of Leonard Cohen. The snippet I got was about a song called “Anthem”. I remember the song making the rounds about 4 years ago, at the time it didn’t get me. A lyric from “Anthem” got me yesterday.
“There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”
Ha! I thought. That sounds about like Wednesday of a 5-day horsemanship clinic. The cracks open up and the light comes streaming in. What you thought was so isn’t so, what you thought you knew isn’t true. The light is blinding at first and ya just want to crawl under a rock and hide. Then slowly, the reality the light is illuminating comes into focus.
There seems to be cracks all around us these days. Cracks in big stuff. Cracks in systems maybe we thought were working but in reality are not. But like Cohen says, cracks are how the light gets in. Light always shines on truth, thats just the way light is.
