Go for the heart

When I was a graduate student in the ‘90s I thought data could change the world. Properly designed, controlled, replicated experiments; good data would point the way. Sometimes it seemed the key didn’t open the door; old bittings perhaps, an aged key worn by time; efficacy lost. The disappoint of youthful dreams; idealism tempered by reality.

Today it seems the door has been barricaded from the inside; deadbolts and door chains; and a note saying keep out!

But there’s another point of entry; around the corner from the heavily fortified door at the front. A side door that is sometimes inadvertently left unlocked. Unguarded and open ajar; a doorway not through the head but through the heart.

In these times of local extinction of sensible dialog and fruitless argument without destination, art may be the greatest ally of science.

Don’t go for the head, it’s much too hard. Don’t go for the head, go for the heart.
Art hits the heart and maybe, just maybe, creates a tiny crack for the light to get in.

More work like this would be good right about now.
