Father knows best. Or does he?

Last summer we took in a couple guests. A friend-of-a-friend was in a bit of a tight spot and needed a place to park her horses for a month. One of the equines was this little pony in the photo above (is she a pony or a mini?, I’m still trying to educate myself on these things and have a ways to go). Peaches. Peaches was a rescue, the story being some guys were using her as a roping dummy. She really does not like ropes, so I think I might believe the story.

Some months have passed now, and after some thought, reflection, and a bit of investigation it seems to me there was a conspiracy. A conspiracy between this friend-of-a-friend, Tiffany and my daughters, to have the pony (or is she a mini?) take up residence here. Evidently they thought I would say “no”, which might be true. Really? A pony/mini?

Peaches has become such a model citizen around here. So well mannered, so willing, she’ll do anything you ask. And the human in the photo, yeah she’s pretty cool too. I swear the other day I saw her trying to poop in a muck bucket I’d left in her pen (the pony, not the child). I’m a scientist though, so no conclusions can be drawn without replication.

So you see kids, the moral of the story is that sometimes conspiracy is the best policy; especially when there’s a dad involved. “Father knows best”. Thats just an old saying, it isn’t really true.

I am a husband and father, I am a scientist and teacher, I am a horseman. At night all the "I am's" go in a box and I shut the lid. I sleep like a dog.

  1. Daughters haha! Love your writing, this piece reminds me of our daughters love of horses and ours of them.
P.S. I worked with your dad in his office for 15 years in the 80’s-90’s. Say hello from Yvonne
